Baseball: FAU beats Lynn 3-2 on walk-off single by freshman Mitch Morales

On a picturesque night, with no clouds in the sky at FAU Baseball Stadium, the Owls performance was anything but beautiful. An erratic play allowed Lynn to score two runs off errors in the third inning.

However, in the end it was a freshman that saved the day. Freshman infielder Mitch Morales hit a game-winning bases loaded walk-off single with two outs, bringing in third baseman Kyle Newton, as the Owls defeated Lynn 3-2.

For a situation as potentially nerve wracking as this, the freshman appeared calm and poised, as if he had done this before on the collegiate level. Except he hadn’t.

“In the inning, I actually told pitcher Ahmed Garcia I can feel it, it’s going to get to me bases loaded with two outs,” Morales said. “I always feel like I play my best at those times, and I managed to come through for my team.”

FAU tied the game at two in the seventh inning with an RBI single by Newton scoring right fielder Corey Keller.

Keller, last week’s Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week, pushed his multi hit game streak to six with two singles in his three at-bats.

Lynn, who has not beaten FAU since 1993 and trail the all time series 13-3, fell behind after the first inning when Owls first baseman Mark Nelson hit a two out RBI double. Lynn took the lead in the third after an error by FAU center fielder Geoff Jimenez on a popup allowed shortstop Kyle Radzewski to score. Lynn catcher Anthony Boza then knocked in the second run on a two out RBI double, increasing FAU’s deficit to 2-0.

FAU starting pitcher Bo Logan pitched three innings, giving up three hits and two unearned runs. Relief pitchers Kevin Perez, Jake Meiers and Ahmed Garcia combined to give up zero runs and allowed only four more hits over the course of the game.

Nelson went 1-3 with an RBI. Morales was 1-3 with an RBI.

FAU is 21-10 and currently 4-1 on its season-long nine game homestand.

FAU begins a three-game home set against South Alabama on Friday, April 6 at 6:30 p.m.
