The Owls are headed to the Maui Invitational but won’t be going to Hawaii.

The men’s basketball team will play in the EA Sports Maui Invitational, an early season tournament now in its 28th year. The Owls will take on Mississippi State (MSU) and the University of North Carolina (UNC) in mainland opening round games before heading off to Elon University for regional games.

“We are very excited to take part in the EA Sports Maui Invitational,” Mike Jarvis, FAU head coach for men’s basketball said to FAU Sports. “Our goal is to eventually be one of the teams that gets to make the trip to Hawaii, but being able to take part in the regional games of the tournament is certainly a step in the right direction.”

In the second year of the new expanded format, FAU is part of four mainland teams who will compete in the event (Colgate University, Coppin State University and Elon University), alongside eight island teams who are the only ones scheduled to make the trip to Hawaii.

The Owls will play at UNC on Sunday, Nov. 11, and at MSU on Tuesday, Nov. 13.

Each of the mainland teams, not including Elon, will square off against two of the island teams. The island teams, not including the host Chaminade, will host opening round games beginning on Friday, Nov. 9, through Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The island teams consist of Butler University, the University of Illinois, Marquette University, MSU, UNC, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California, and host Chaminade University.

After the island teams travel to Hawaii, the mainland teams will be left to battle it out on the hardwood in the regional games taking place at Alumni Gym on Nov. 17 and 18. The Owls play Coppin State on Saturday, Nov.17, and Colgate plays host Elon. The losers will be matched up the following day along with the winners.
