V-Day, short for Valentine’s Day, is a term that almost everyone is familiar with in reference to candy, affection and love. But as of last year it took on yet another meaning and became a worldwide effort to stop violence against women. V-Day, encompassing February 14 and the surrounding days, aims to provoke artistic and theatrical events to raise awareness and money for the protection of women against violence. A main outcome that emerged from the V-Day movement is The Vagina Monologues, a play written by Eve Ensler. The monologues, which range from humorous to tragic, are a series of stories based on true events.
Florida Atlantic University is one of the 550 colleges and universities from around the world that have joined the 2002 V-Day College Campaign. The Crones Counsel, with various other clubs and departments, are sponsoring the on-campus performance of the Vagina Monologues. The cast and production are completely comprised of FAU students and Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse (AVDA) will receive 80% of all profits made off ticket sales.
