Does anyone read anymore? That’s what I’ve been asking myself as of recently. Besides my schoolbooks, I generally try to get through a book a month. I’ve noticed though over the coarse of the past few years that there has been a decline in people reading. Reading for fun, that’s how the saying goes.
Sure, there are better things to do, but every now and then it’s nice to spend a Sunday afternoon out on the porch on a nice, quiet day reading a neat mystery novel. Or even on a Wednesday night when you can’t fall asleep because you’re too engulfed into an intriguing adventure novel. What has happened to the amount of people who read novels in America? They probably got hooked on television before they could get into reading.
Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of magazines in circulation as well as newspapers that people pick up and read daily, weekly, or even bi-weekly. I for one read the Sun-Sentinel, New York Times, and USA Today daily. I won’t read every article, but each paper has particular sections and journalists that I enjoy reading from. A point to be made, there are so many excuses people make for not reading, and to be honest – all the excuses people come up with are just laughable.
I personally like adventure or mystery novels myself, but there are good romance and humor novels as well, fiction and non-fiction. Dan Brown has been one of the hottest authors on the market. I suggest anyone who needs a good book to find Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons and get started. Most bookstores now have sale prices on his books too. Dan Brown is a very talented writer, and any of us his books are good.
His books are nifty to read too because each chapter he writes is only a few pages long, so you can be able to pick up and put down the book several times without getting stuck in the middle. Most people I’ve gotten back into the trend of reading have enjoyed this book, and I’d recommend it to anyone. People make excuses not to read and always will. There will always be the people who will refuse to read.
I’ve heard everything from how boring novels are, how television is better, or even that people have better things to do. Maybe they’re right. As it is some of us, myself included, read the books from our classes. Whatever the matter may be though, unless you’re illiterate I suggest people read a few novels a year.
Even now you can download books in an audio format, which may be cool, but the fact is, the listener isn’t reading for fun. Some people like the story, sure but I think it’s reading that keeps our minds fresh and stimulated. On top of that, libraries are some of the greatest resources for novels, books, and information that are available to every U.S. citizen.
Maybe you just don’t like to read, or would rather see a movie, but a good book can keep you hooked for days. Every now and then it’s good to read a book or two, I suggest giving it a look.
