On Feb. 24 at 7:00 p.m., the Jupiter campus will host the fifth annual Lunafest, the national touring film festival presenting films by, for and about women. This year’s Lunafest will mark the first Lunafest to occur in Palm Beach County, but organizers hope that this can become an annual event. Lunafest’s creator, Luna, the whole nutrition bar for women, first organized the film festival as a way to raise awareness for breast cancer, as well as to promote women’s issues and the works of talented female filmmakers. Along with fellow sponsors, Water for Women and Nutrition S’mart, Luna focuses on making the event a function where women in the community can come together and interact with one another. Not only is this an event to sponsor further research for a disease that affects thousands of women nationally, it is an event hoping to promote the further advancement of women in the professional world. With this in mind, Terry Gearing, the director of University Relations on the MacArthur Campus, hopes that the event will be a “great opportunity for adult women to meet female students to make connections,” which can hopefully turn into job shadowing or mentorship opportunities. Though the films and intentions focus on promoting women’s issues, the festival will prove entertaining and enjoyable to both sexes and men are encouraged to attend. The group of eight short films range in size from a five-minute animated feature about the romantic lives of senior citizens, to a twenty-one-minute introspective drama about a Russian woman who must deal with the disappearance of her young daughter. Chosen from 200 submissions, these eight films span different genres and cultural origins, demonstrating the many different challenges as well as comedic happenings of different women in the twenty-first century. Topics range from an Asian girl’s struggle to become perfect (as illustrated with the Milton-Bradley game Perfection), to dealing with menopause in the midst of maintaining the demands of work and family life, to the forging of an unlikely friendship between a young woman and a Holocaust survivor. All of these award-winning films were chosen to present the multifaceted world of women. Lunafest will be working in conjunction with the Feminist Student Union along with its other sponsors to present this evening and provide appropriate refreshments during intermission of WH20 and Luna bars. However, since one of the goals of Lunafest is to raise money for the Breast Cancer Fund, tickets will not be free. Tickets will be $8 for students and $10 for members of the community. Though the proceeds will primarily go to the Breast Cancer Fund, some of the proceeds will be donated to the Feminist Student Union as well as FAU scholarships. Further advertisement will provide more information regarding the purchasing of tickets.
