BOCA RATON, FL (November 30, 2006) – Board of Trustees – Student Body President, Austin J. Shaw, attended the BOT meeting on November 8th. The Board’s main focus was on Florida Atlantic University’s expansion of its academic programs, to best benefit our traditional and nontraditional students to reach a higher level of education opportunities.
Moreover, they talked about the Innovation Village on the Boca Raton Campus. This addition will bring more campus life and become more attractive to the students who seek the traditional American college experience. Our President, Frank T. Brogan, commented on his Column, that every traditional university has a campus hub, where friendships are forged and memories are made. This is exactly what the Innovation Village will be. This complex will include housing, retail space, athletic facilities and so much more.
MacArthur Campus – November 6th- 17th, SAVI’s Thanksgiving Food Drive in correlation with Publix and Food for Families is still up and running. Many students have taken advantage of this opportunity of giving back to the community by dropping their non-perishable items into the donation boxes placed around campus.
The Bush Gardens trip was on November 12th. After breakfast at 6:30am, two charter busses filled with 100 eager FAU students headed to Tampa. Students thoroughly enjoyed their time spent at the park, as well as their free meal passes provided by Program Board.
Go Van Gogh is an Interactive Studio where you can paint your own ceramics pottery. Many students, both residential and on campus, are excited for the chance to be creative. The trip took place November 17th. There were two sessions; one at 6pm and one at 8pm.
Recreation’s Ice Skating trip was on November 14th. Twenty students went to Palm Beach Ice Zone on November 19th to stake from 6-8pm. The FAU students are surprised to see such a variety in their sport activities and cannot wait to enjoy them.
DIVERSITY WEEK – Eastern Asian Culture Fest – SGA’s diversity kickoff took place on November 13th, at the Davie Campus. They provided live entertainment like Japanese Geisha dancers, Fushu Daiko Japanese drummers, Kung Fu demonstrations, delicious Chinese and Sushi food, Martial Arts Video Game competitions. Moreover, the Sumo Suit Wrestling had a big success among the students. This program was co-sponsored by Owl Productions, Owl TV, Broward Multicultural Affairs, Volunteer Center and the Wellness Center.
The Louvre – On November 14th, Treasure Coast Campus held a tribute to France as part of their involvement on Diversity Week, “A Night at the Louvre”. They exhibited art work by local artists, live musicians, and French food.
Festivus – On November 15th, MacArthur’s SGA served 600 plates of food and had a great turnout. Students enjoyed the Thai themed buffet, which offered many exotic food choices, the dances and the different activities offered by SGA. The Tea Club served Thai Tea as a part of their involvement in the event. Students liked the chance to experience such rarities.
SUNDANCE Cultural Festival – The grand finale was held November 16th, on the Boca Raton Campus. SGA celebrated the diverse student population at Florida Atlantic University with the variety of ethnic food provided and the live performances. The event had presentations like the traditional Thai dance (Thai Student Association), a Reggae singer (Caribbean Student Association), a Brazilian drum show (Mano Santa), a traditional Greek dance (Hellenic Student Association), a Spanish Guitar show (Latino Fire), which was greatly enjoyed by the audience. Students had a good time with the performances and food provided by the clubs and SGA. Additionally, Dr. Charles Brown, Vice President for Student Affairs, stated that he was pleased with the event and that more activities such as Diversity Week will increase school spirit.
Football Game vs. North Texas – On November 17th, Jared Torres, UWC Representative for the Boca Raton Campus and Geno Roefaro, Agencies and Programs Chair, went to Denton, Texas on behalf of Student Government as guests of the Department of Athletics. They traveled with the football team and the Prowlers. It was an opportunity to see another university, their facilities, their stadium and how they operate.
