No, the jewel case doesn’t come filled with Ritalin, but once you pick up Elephant Shell by the Tokyo Police Club, you will be kept busy with a sound that makes you want to jump around like you were a kid again.
The four 20-somethings who make up the Tokyo Police Club have a frantic punk/pop style that exploded onto the world through hundreds of club gigs and an extremely short EP, A Lesson in Crime.
It was 16 minutes long, with each song lasting about two minutes and change.
This trend of having many short songs is seen a lot in punk music and has carried over to Elephant Shell, where half of the album is over by the time you hit the 16 minute mark.
Each song may be short, but they are filled with energy, and make you want to get up and jump around.
The energy that drives each song along comes from quick drum and guitar work by Alsop and Hook. The vocals by Monks drive the story, and a background keyboard by Wright provides some nice background melodies – they even use xylophones.
Each song on Elephant Shell has a different style of punk. “Tessellate” and “Your English is Good” are hard, fast and old-school punk: really fast drums, heavy and quick bass guitars, beautiful vocals with cut-ins from the rest of the band, awesome keyboards pushing from the back and clapping! “Centennial” and “The Harrowing Adventures of…” are more conservative and hold back.
The Tokyo Police Club may sound similar to The Killers, but you should definitely keep your ears open for these guys, because they are going to be big. You can find Elephant Shell via Amazon.com at http://www.amazon.com/Elephant-Shell-Tokyo-Police-Club/dp/B0014DC06O.
