If you add girls with Mohawks, and shirtless, hairy, sweaty men wearing bandanas over their faces, to a large area for moshing and some great heavy rock music, you would get the Mayhem Festival.
July 30 at the Cruzan Amphitheater in West Palm was a long, hot, yet energetic day. The diehard fans first showed up when doors opened at 2p.m., dealing with the heat to see some great acts like 36 Crazyfists, Walls of Jericho and Suicide Silence. If you can’t tell by the band names, this was not a show to bring your girlfriend to. The heavy, fast, energetic music kept the mosh pits alive and the Jí_ger flowing.
As the day grew on, more people filled the seats and the grass area to see Underoath, Machine Head, Mastodon, Dragonforce, and the headliners Disturbed and Slipknot. Underoath, headed by Aaron Gillespie (also of the band The Almost), consider themselves to be “Christian Rock.” They gave quite an impressive performance while dodging a lightning storm that left the amps silent for 10 minutes in the middle of their set. While rain may be bad for the electronics, the crowd loved getting the chance to cool off from the sweltering heat.
Something the Mayhem Festival has that other festivals don’t is the chance to choose each band’s playlist online,on the Mayhem Fest Web site you can help choose the set list by voting for your favorite songs.
