FAU’s defense has largely been scrutinized this season for their subpar play, but the unit responded with its most impressive performance en route to helping the Owls achieve their first home win of the season against Arkansas State on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Lockhart Stadium, with a 35-18 victory.
Quarterback Jeff Van Camp shook off his first-string nerves and went 18-27 for 242 yards and three touchdowns, including a 52-yard touchdown hookup with wide receiver Jason Harmon in the fourth quarter.
“The offensive line played great,” said Van Camp, who is now 1-1 as a starter. “Thanks to them, we got the win tonight.”
Running back Alfred Morris added 117 rushing yards and three touchdowns, one of which came in the first drive of the game.
“Coach [Darryl] Jackson puts a lot of emphasis on scoring on the first drive of the game. It sets a tone, and sends a message to the defense,” said Morris, who made his first career touchdown reception vs. ASU.
The Owls trailed 9-7 at halftime, but they quickly turned the game around with 14 unanswered points. The scores were from Morris on a 7-yard scamper and fullback Willie Rose on a 10-yard touchdown reception.
Coming off an embarrassing performance vs. University of Alabama-Birmingham last week, the Owls defense held Arkansas State to four field goals and just one touchdown, which came late in the fourth quarter.
Freshman linebacker David Hinds received the first start of his career against the Red Wolves, replacing Michael Lockley, who was benched due to coaching decisions. Hinds filled in nicely, making 12 tackles. He was also able to sack ASU quarterback Ryan Aplin.
“It was a very satisfying win for our entire program.” said Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger
The Owls next travel to Troy, Ala., on Nov. 20 to play the Trojans.
