Just days after posting double-digit runs in consecutive wins against Boston College, the Owls baseball team found themselves in the midst of another high-scoring affair against University of Pittsburgh, and FAU needed a big comeback to improve to 6-4 on the season.
The Owls beat Pittsburgh 10-7, but starting pitcher R.J. Alvarez, along with relievers Kenny Gray and Jason Boyer, seemed absolutely overwhelmed by the active bats of the Pittsburgh lineup. The assortment of mishandled pitches and ground balls, as well as other mistakes, didn’t help the Owls’ defensive situation, either.
After having scored a run in each of the first two innings, the Panthers used a series of walks and singles at the top of the fourth to produce two more runs. Then, with a full count, the game was broken open by first baseman David Chester, who cleared the bases with a line-drive double, bringing the Panthers’ lead to 7-1.
It was at that point that team co-captain Lou Morey stepped in to stop the offensive onslaught. In relief he pitched two-and-a-third shutout innings, setting the tone for what would be a miraculous comeback by the Owls.
It took the Owls a while to decipher the changing speeds of Pittsburgh starting pitcher Josh Smith, but, in the sixth inning, outfielder Anthony Mesa used a bases-clearing double of his own to make it a 7-5 game. Then a wild pitch and a pinch-hit single by infielder Sean Bukovich added two more runs for FAU to tie the game.
During the bottom of the eighth, the patient bats of FAU prevailed. Singles by both catcher Mike Albaladejo and outfielder Andy Mee helped to set the stage for a go-ahead double by junior infielder Dan Scheffler. The extra-base hit scored two runs and highlighted a three-run inning that put the Owls up 10-7.
That score would go unchanged, as Mee recorded the save when he pitched a shutout ninth inning.
