FAU police arrested Ryan Beauchamp, a junior transfer student, this week for having a gun on campus.
Police Chief Charles Lowe said they found the weapon after Beauchamp, an electrical engineering major, had ammunition shipped to his on-campus apartment. They were alerted to the situation after the mailroom attendant in the University Village Apartments received a box that said “9 mm ammunition” on the side.
But they were not concerned about Beauchamp’s intent.
“Guns on campus are a hot topic, but this was a different situation because of how it came about,” said Lowe.
Beauchamp said he didn’t mean any harm, and that the ammunition was to pay back a friend.
“We go to the gun range all the time. Ammunition is expensive and hard to find, and I just wanted to pay them back for the ammo that I’d used in the past,” he said.
Beauchamp was arrested on a weapons possession charge and later released on Thursday with no bail.
FAU police said the investigation is still open, and that Beauchamp will face student disciplinary charges on top of criminal charges.
