FAU played its first official road game of the season against University of Miami as it lost 7-3 on Tuesday, March 15, in Coral Gables.
The Hurricanes took an early 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first as left fielder Zeke DeVoss, designated hitter Rony Rodriguez, right fielder Chantz Mack and first baseman Harold Martinez all scored runs.
The Owls answered with their only three runs of the night in the top of the third. The first two came from second baseman Raymond Church, whose bunt to the third baseline slipped past UM third baseman Brad Fieger for an error and allowed Church to score a two-run RBI triple. Following the runs, catcher Mike Albaladejo brought Church home on a sacrifice fly, making the score 4-3.
UM came out in the next inning with an almost identical scoring pattern, driving in three more runs on a two-run RBI triple by second baseman Michael Broad, and an RBI sacrifice fly by DeVoss to score Broad.
Starting on the mound for FAU was Jake Meiers (1-3), who pitched five innings allowing seven runs and three walks, with three strikeouts. Out of the bullpen, Ahmed Garcia and Hugh Adams managed to hold off the Hurricanes from scoring more runs, but the Owls offense struggled to get runners on base.
Despite scoring three runs, FAU only managed to get two hits the entire game. UM closing pitcher Daniel Miranda closed the game getting an easy three outs to seal the 7-3 victory for the Hurricanes.
FAU will play its first Sun Belt Conference series of the season against local rival Florida International University starting on Friday, March 18,at 6:30 p.m. in Boca Raton.
