On Saturday Oct. 15, members of the FAU men’s basketball team were awarded their first ever Sun Belt Conference regular season championship rings. The team earned their rings with the best record in school history last year: 21-11.
When asked how it felt to give FAU its first regular season Conference Championship in school history, head coach Mike Jarvis said “It feels great because I know how difficult it is, and I know how much of a challenge it is, and I just think that it is a blessing. We have got great kids here on the team and we’re building something”.
FAU’s men’s basketball program has grown from the 6 and 26 team that came in 6th place in its division in 2008, to a 21 and 11 team that came in 1st place, winning the Sun Belt conference regular season championship. Coach Jarvis was named the 2010 Sun Belt Conference Head Coach of the year last season.
Dennis Mavin, a shooting guard for FAU, said “It feels great to win the ring in my first year, but we’re in a building process, and we want an NCAA ring next.”
Ray Taylor, the point guard for FAU, was named to the All-Sun Belt conference tournament team. When Taylor was asked how it felt to receive his ring, he smiled.
“It’s very humbling to know that hard work does pay off. For us to get this ring it signifies and solidifies that no one can ever take this away from us.”
Coach Jarvis, while addressing the media at the ring presentation ceremony said “We have a group of guys that I believe in, when I recruit, I recruit character, and our guys are going to play their hearts out this year”.
