It took less than a week for the new Owls head football coach Carl Pelini to make an addition to his staff.
Pelini hired Marvin Sanders, former defensive backs coach at Nebraska, as FAU’s new defensive coordinator, according to fauowlaccess.com.
The details of the contract were not immediately released.
Sanders will replace long time FAU defensive coordinator Kurt Van Valkenburgh. The 62-year-old coached at FAU for 13 years, and the Owls’ defense allowed 34.7 points per game this season.
Sanders was the defensive backs coach at Nebraska under Bo Pelini from 2008-2010, and additionally served as defensive coordinator at North Carolina from 2006-08. Sanders also played under Tom Osborne at Nebraska from 1987- 89 as a defensive back.
Sanders sat next to Carl Pelini and Athletics Director Craig Angelos at The Burrow on Saturday night, taking in a men’s basketball game against Warner Southern. Sanders, who did not coach in 2011 due to family reasons, is expected to step in and help the Owls’ football team immediately.
