Led by three runs from catcher Mike Spano, FAU snapped a two-game losing streak by defeating Fordham 8-5 at FAU Baseball Stadium.
FAU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning. FAU left fielder Greg Bennis tripled and then scored off a Geoff Jimenez ground out. FAU second baseman Mike Albaladejo knocked in an RBI double in the inning as well.
The lead was extended to 5-0 in the third after a solo home run for Spano and a Fordham error.
Fordham would rally to tie the game at five in the top of the seventh inning after center fielder Matthew Cianci scored on a ground out from shortstop Ryan Maghini. The Owls immediately answered back to take the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. FAU designated hitter Ricky Santiago hit a two-out double and scored on a single from shortstop Mitch Morales.
FAU relief pitcher R.J. Alvarez was credited with the win. Alvarez had three strikeouts in 2.2 innings to close the game. FAU starting pitcher Austin Gomber shut out Fordham and had seven strikeouts in five innings.
Albaladejo went 3 for 4. Owls first basemen Mark Nelson was 3 for 5. Spano finished 2 for 4 with three RBI’s.
The Owls improved to 11-7 on the season.
FAU plays a three-game road series with FIU starting March 16.
