FAU’s hot bats did not cool off in the series finale, as they defeated FIU 9-3 at FIU Baseball Stadium.
Owls first baseman Mark Nelson knocked in 4 RBI’s to help FAU sweep the weekend series from its South Florida rivals. The Owls jumped out to a 4-1 by the fourth inning. Nelson singled in the third inning to bring in center fielder Geoff Jimenez. Catcher Mike Albaladejo scored an unearned run to conclude the inning.
In the fourth, a Jimenez double to left field scored infielder Dylan Seigel. FAU added three more runs in the sixth inning on a Nelson right field homer in the inning to put the game out of reach at 7-2.
FAU starting pitcher Austin Gomber had 10 strikeouts and allowed five hits in six innings. Relievers Michael Sylvestri and Ahmed Garcia each had three strikeouts to close out the game for the Owls.
Nelson finished 2 for 5. Third baseman Kyle Newton was 2 for 5 as well. Jimenez led the team in hits, going 3 for 5.
The Owls will look to avenge its Feb. 29 road loss to the Hurricanes on March 21 at 6:30 p.m. at FAU Baseball Stadium.
