FAU started its three game road series Friday night with a win against the University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks. Owls starting pitcher Ryan Garton was credited with the victory in the game.
This brings Garton’s ERA to 2.86, and improves his regular season record to 6-2 after he struck out eight batters and gave up just five hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings pitched.
The Owls started the game out strong as the team took a 5-0 lead after five innings behind an impressive pitching performance from Garton. Mike Albaladejo, who sometimes plays catcher, was at second base this game. He contributed with a single up the middle with bases loaded to bring in two runs in the second inning. Albaladejo added a sacrifice fly to in the sixth to bring in catcher Mike Spano from third base.
Louisiana-Monroe added five runs in the last four innings, however, FAU first baseman Mark Nelson would step to the plate with shortstop Mitch Morales on second in the eighth inning with two outs. Nelson would belt a three run homerun over the right field wall to expand the team’s lead to 9-2. The Warhawks would get five runs in the bottom of the eighth inning behind a bases loaded single from their first baseman, Joey Rapp.
FAU closer R.J. Alvarez closed the game out and earned a save. Alvarez did not give up a run, and struck out one batter to save his fifth game of the season.
FAU is back in action tomorrow as they play Louisiana-Monroe at 7 p.m.
