Owls baseball missed history on campus. Then lost its second straight game. With their regularly scheduled game versus Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) moved to Fort Myers because of President Barack Obama’s arrival on campus, FAU (22-12, ranked No.28 nationally in Collegiate Baseball poll) lost to FGCU 6-5 at Swanson Stadium.
Down 5-4, an Owls two-out rally in the ninth inning tied the game. First baseman Mark Nelson singled to left center field, advancing outfielder Corey Keller to third base. Keller then scored the game tying run on a wild pitch.
However, in the bottom of the ninth, FGCU clinched the win with a walk-off single by second baseman Brandon Bednar off FAU reliever Bo Logan.
Earlier, FAU fought back from a 4-2 deficit, tying the game in the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly from Nelson that drove in center fielder Geoff Jimenez.
FAU third baseman Kyle Newton was 2 for 4 with three runs. Catcher Mike Spano went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
FAU begins a three-game road series against Sun Belt Conference opponent Louisiana-Monroe on Friday, April 13 at 7:00 p.m.
