After three weekends of conference play, the Owls are still on top of the Sun Belt.
Led by strong pitching and solid hitting, FAU swept a doubleheader today from Louisiana-Lafayette to take the three-game series from the Ragin Cajuns.
In game one, FAU defeated Louisiana-Lafayette 5-2 in a makeup of Saturday’s postponed game. The Owls followed up with an 8-3 victory in game two.
FAU is now a league-best 8-1 in conference play.
In game one, FAU junior outfielder Corey Keller went 4 for 4 with three RBIs. Keller’s line drive to center field brought home third baseman Kyle Newton for the go ahead run, giving the Owls a 3-2 lead. FAU scored two more more runs in the inning to cap the scoring.
Relievers Jake Meiers and R.J. Alvarez closed the game out for the Owls. Meiers had three strikeouts in two scoreless innings and recorded the victory. Alvarez did not allow a runner on base, as he picked up his fourth save of the season.
In game two, FAU displayed its power early, putting the Ragin Cajuns away with three left field home runs in the first two innings.
In the first inning, Owls first baseman Mark Nelson blasted a two-run homer, his fifth of the season. Keller then launched a solo homer on FAU’s next at bat, his team-leading sixth of the season. FAU infielder Ricky Santiago started the second inning off with a home run, increasing the lead to 4-0.
FAU freshman starting pitcher Austin Gomber picked up the win. He allowed one hit and had seven strikeouts in five innings.
