FAU defeated Louisiana-Monroe in a close game by a final score of 6-5. The victory gave the team a 2-1 edge against their Sun Belt Conference rivals in this weekend’s road series.
The Owls got off to a fast start in the game by scoring four runs in the first inning against Louisiana-Monroe starting left-handed pitcher Fraser Adams. FAU’s designated hitter, Alex Hudak, came to bat with the bases loaded in the first inning. He doubled to the gap in right-center on a 1-0 pitch, clearing the bases as he drove in three RBIs. Hudak led all FAU players in offense on the day, going 2 for 5 with a double and three RBI.
The Warhawks would battle back to take the lead against FAU as Owls left-handed pitcher Bo Logan came on in during the fifth inning to replace starter Austin Gomber. FAU was winning the game 4-3, however the Warhawks had runners on the corners and just one out when Logan came in as relief. He was able to get the final two outs in the inning, but not before allowing a run to score on a wild-pitch, tying the game at four.
The Owls would win the game in the sixth inning as first baseman Mark Nelson hit a single to drive in catcher Mike Albaladejo from second base, giving FAU a 6-5 lead in the game. This would be the second run FAU would score in the inning, the first on a single by left-fielder Nathan Pittman, one that would score shortstop Mitch Morales.
Logan redeemed himself and earned the win for FAU. He pitched a solid 2.2 innings and gave up only two hits with a strikeout, no walks and zero earned runs. R.J. Alvarez was awarded his seventh save of the season, pitching a scoreless eighth and ninth inning in relief of Logan.
With the win today against Louisiana-Monroe, FAU remains in first place in the Sun Belt Conference with an overall record of 24-13. The Owls are leading the Sun Belt Conference by four games over rival Arkansas State. FAU will match up with Arkansas State in a three game home series beginning Friday, April 20, in.
