Starting this fall, students will pay more money to attend the same old FAU.
Today, the university’s Board of Trustees — FAU’s thirteen highest-ranking officials — voted to raise two fees all FAU students pay. The Athletics Fee by 5 percent and the Activities & Services (A&S) Fee 3 percent for the 2012 – 2013 academic year. (See chart below.)
The A&S Fee funds Student Government and other student clubs on campus. It also funds the Boca and Davie campus’ student unions, the Jupiter Burrow, Davie’s Student Wellness Center and Boca’s Recreation and Fitness Center.
“It cost money to fix things, you know,” Student Body President Robert Huffman said about the increase.
FAU President Mary Jane Saunders could not be reached for comment by publication time.
The Athletics Fee increase is one of the ways the university is paying off the loan it took out to pay for the new stadium.
The Board of Trustees also voted to increase the housing rates starting this fall.
“That’s a tough one,” Huffman said about his vote for the increase. “I think the housing fees are already really large.” The Student Body President is the only student who sits on the Board of Trustees and votes with the other twelve members.
