FAU students driving down 20th Street encountered clouds of smoke and blocked roads today around 3 p.m.
A fire broke out at Craftline Cabinets, a large cabinet-making warehouse on 100 N.W. 28th St., about two miles from campus.
Dixie Highway, N.W. 2nd Ave., Boca Raton Boulevard., 28th Street and 24th Street are all shut down until the smoke is cleared up.
The business caught on fire this afternoon around 2:10.
Craftline Cabinets’ workers were routing machinery to cut fibrous material. Dust got inside the machine and sparked a flame. The warehouse had a large supply of wood and glue, which added more fuel to the fire, igniting the entire building. All occupants were forced to evacuate. About $300,000 worth of material inside the building was completely destroyed, according to Boca Fire Rescue’s assistant fire chief, Michael Gergora.
“Be very vigilant when working with machinery and materials that produce fine dust because they can ignite very easily,” Gergora advised FAU students. “We’re trying to save the building from collapsing, but most likely it’s a total loss.”
Traffic is expected to be cleared up by 6 p.m.
