FAU’s Davie campus, Broward College and six other area schools experienced lockdowns earlier this afternoon.
At 1:25 p.m., FAU made an announcement through the emergency text messaging system, which warned students about an armed intruder/shooter on Davie’s campus and to seek shelter in a secure location.
Nzingah Oniwosan, a senior neuroscience and behavior major who was on Davie’s campus during the lockdown, felt nervous when she received the emergency text.
“[My] first thought was, ‘What the hell?’” Oniwosan said. “You never know how these thing can go. [I] felt good that the alert went through.”
Davie police searched for the suspect after a witness at the Davie campus told an officer that a woman was entering the library, while removing what looked like to the witness, a copper-colored gun from her pocket, according to NBC 6 news.
The armed intruder was described as a “white female. Approx. 20 to 22 years of age. 5’4” tall. Black, curly hair, high top sneakers, jeans and low cut blouse,” according to the FAU alert text message.
What looked like a copper-colored gun to the witness was actually a lighter in the shape of a .22 or .25-caliber semi-automatic pistol, Davie Police Captain Dale Engle said.
Officers closed certain roads in the vicinity as well as schools including Davie Elementary, McFatter Technical Center, Nova Blanche Forman Elementary, Nova Eisenhower Elementary, Nova Middle School and Nova High School, according to NBC 6 news.
Once the suspect was found and searched for the lighter, the lockdowns were lifted around 2:15 p.m.
