Coming off two straight victories away from Boca to end 2012, FAU women’s head coach Kellie Lewis-Jay called her squad “road warriors.” Back in Boca for the first game of the new year, the Owls easily protected home court.
The Owls (8-5 overall record) routed Louisiana 79-44 at The Burrow to extend its perfect conference record (5-0).
Owls guard Latavia Dempsey had a career-high of 19 points and nailed all five of her 3-point attempts. Forward Chenise Miller scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win. Guards Takia Brooks and Kimberly Smith chipped in 11 points as well.
Despite coming into the game as the nation’s 31st ranked offense, it was defense that impressed Lewis-Jay. The Owls had a school-record 13 blocks while allowing a season-low in points against Louisiana.
FAU outrebounded an opponent for the first time since the season opener at Georgia Southern on Nov. 9.
“There were times tonight that we showed our best effort, especially in gaining the rebounding edge (57-42),” Lewis-Jay said to FAU Sports. “There were stretches when we were very good offensively and defensively. When we put all those things together it is going to be pretty special.”
FAU plays at Middle Tennessee State on Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 8 p.m.
