A month into the new semester, the stress begins to settle in. But a chance to take a break from your crazy schedule is coming up on Monday night and you’ll finally be able to let out that laughter you’ve been holding in.
On Feb. 11, Program Board — a student-run organization that organizes entertainment on campus — arranged for comedians Michael Blackson and Ron G to take campus and make you fall out of your seats from laughter. They will be taking center stage in the Barry Kaye Auditorium at 8 p.m.
Program Board will also be announcing the act that will be performing at the 2013 Freaker’s Ball concert in April. The date of the show will also be announced at the comedy show.
Program Board Director Lexi Rosario could not be reached for comment about the Freaker’s Ball or the comedy show.
As a comedian, Blackson began his career in Philadelphia comedy clubs in 1992. He is known today for his using African culture in his comedy routine. According to Blackson’s website, he’s been involved in BET’s ComicView Series, HBO’s Def Comedy Jam, Showtime at Harlem, and Live in Hollywood. He got his “big break” from performing in the comedy film Next Friday, according to his website.
“He’s funny. I know for sure that I’ll get a laugh out of it,” said Marvinson Nicolas, junior behavior and neuroscience psychology major, referring to the upcoming comedy show. “I’m pretty sure I’ll have a good time.”
Nicolas is not the only student who is positive about the show. Dean Dunovski, junior electrical engineering major, has attended two of Blackson’s comedy shows, and is confident he will do well Monday night.
“From what I’ve seen, you can expect a good turnout of people,” said Dunovski. “You know, I think people will enjoy it.”
Accompanying Blackson at the comedy show will be Ron G, awarded for being the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities College Comic of the Year in 2010, according to his website. He has been a finalist on Bill Bellamy’s “Who’s Got Jokes?” and NBC’s “Last Comic Standing.” On his website, he’s quoted saying, “I want to represent the new generation of comedians that get overlooked. I’d like to show the world the new generation is just as funny, clever and talented.”
Joshua Flackenjoys spending his time watching Ron G on YouTube ever since seeing him on “Last Comic Standing.” The freshman pre-business major describes himself watching Ron G on YouTube as “not being able to breathe.”
“He’s a very funny guy,” said Flack. “I can’t wait to go Monday and see him.”
Although Cody Castilla, sophomore criminal justice major, has never heard of Blackson or Ron G, he still said he’d expect good standup comedy.
“It’s all relatable,” said Castilla. “It’s something we can joke about ‘cause we go through the experience ourselves.”
