FAU’s Hoot/Wisdom Recordings presented the first ever Hootstock, a night of free music, on Saturday, March 30 at 5 p.m. The event took place at the outdoor theater and was held in promotion of their 3rd Volume of their compilation CD, Compowlation.The Compowlation is an annual CD produced by FAU’s student-run record label, Hoot/Wisdom Recordings. The album features a collection of various styles of music from student bands and musicians.
The four rock, punk, and indie rock bands that performed were Tickets to a Blimp, Raggy Monster, Phantomime, and The Pathetique. Colored LED lights beamed at the stage and crowd of what started as 50 people as the bands performed. By the end of the night, the bands were performing for a crowd of about 150.
Tickets to a Blimp is a three-piece melodic punk band with high energy riffs similar to The Flatliners.
From West Palm Beach, Raggy Monster is an indie rock band with female singer Rachel Duvall possessing strong vocals and male vocalist Billy Schmidt also playing a range of guitar, piano/keyboard, and keytar.
Phantomime, a “burlesque rock” band, plays a sound similar to Panic at the Disco but with humorous and energetic stage performance.
The headliners, The Pathetique, a six-piece band with a female lead singer, plays a versatile mix of melodic and upbeat indie rock. They also did covers by Middle Class Rut and Radiohead.
The bands that performed, along with other artists, will be represented in this year’s Compowlation. The student-run label will release the third volume over the summer, which will include songs from a variety of FAU student bands and musicians.
