FAU’s Top five moments that made headlines
January 7, 2014
Florida Atlantic University had a rough start to its spring semester — school wasn’t even officially open for business when the first newsworthy moment graced the covers. With three incidents occurring before finals week, and another two during the fall, FAU only seemed to be furthering an already infamous reputation. Here are the top five stories that made 2013 a less than stellar year for the Owls in the news.
1. James Tracy started out 2013 making headlines with his controversial blog post, “Sandy Hook School Massacre Part II: Continued Ambiguity and Augmented Realities,” coming out on New Year’s Day. The FAU professor trended on Twitter as people called for his resignation — though he wasn’t the only FAU professor to fall under this trend in the spring of 2013.
2. GEO Group Stadium replaced FAU’s nameless football stadium for less than two months before the GEO Group retracted its $6 million donation. In those two months, protesters marched and chanted against the private prison company’s naming rights — and one protester got hit by Former President Mary Jane Saunders’ car.
3. President Saunders resigned after a semester filled with bad press for selling the FAU football stadium’s naming rights to a prison group and hitting a student with her car. When asked if she would ever consider another presidency, Saunders said, “I’d have to ask how many newspapers are in town first.”
4. A shooting close to campus, two armed robberies (one in Arts and Letters and one in UVA), and one falsely reported armed robbery occurring within a month of each other left students insecure about campus safety during the fall 2013 semester. FAU PD also had an investigation about a “Peeping Tom” who had been videotaping men in the bathroom since August.
5. Carl Pelini resigned after allegations of drug use, fought to get his job back after denying the allegations and was fired for mismanaging his staff.
