In Photos: Despite winning series versus UAB, FAU Baseball still out of 2014 C-USA Tournament
By the second game of their series against Alabama-Birmingham, the Florida Atlantic Owls knew their season had come to an end — and it was no fault of their own.
The Conference USA Tournament takes only the first eight teams in the conference standings. Heading into the weekend, FAU (28-25, 14-16) needed East Carolina University to lose all three games of its series with Texas-San Antonio.
East Carolina defeated UTSA 3-2 on Friday evening, avoiding a sweep and rendering the Owls out of post-season contention. An ECU sweep, combined with an FAU sweep of UAB, would push the Owls from ninth place into eighth place in the conference standings.
FAU won the both games of their Friday doubleheader (by scores of 3-1 and 10-9, respectively), giving head coach John McCormack wins 200 and 201 of his career.
A 8-6 loss to UAB on Saturday brought the Owls’ season to a close, and they finished the regular season in ninth place in the C-USA standings, just one spot out of the conference tournament. UAB (35-19, 20-10) will enter the tournament as a two seed.
