The students of Verde Elementary School in Boca Raton were excited as Florida Atlantic University football players, head coach Charlie Partridge, and the FAU cheer team came out to talk to them on Wednesday afternoon.

The cheer team led students in a cheer routine, while coach Partridge and his players stressed the importance of reading, good nutrition, and being a good person. Owsley, Florida Atlantic’s mascot, also made an appearance to meet the kids.

This was all part of FAU’s Involvement with The Second And Seven Foundation. The foundation’s mission is to promote literacy in elementary schools across the nation through student athletes reading and talking to the students.

Currently, several colleges participate in the program. including Illinois University,The University of North Carolina, and Bowling Green University. FAU is the only university in Florida that participates in the program.

“It was a very wonderful experience,” said Seth Moldovan, Principal of Verde Elementary school “It’s great to give these kids positive role models to teach them good values and the importance of reading.”

To get the opportunity, Verde Elementary students participated in the REDBLUE spring game banner contest held by FAU last April. “The students made a banner for the contest that won first place, along with this opportunity,” said Moldovan. “It was a great way for FAU to get involved with the community and create a strong bond.”

Players involved with the day included defensive lineman Haiden Nagel, running back Adrian Sterling, wide receivers  DJ Justie and Derek Moise, and defensive back Anthony Hamilton.

“I would love for them to visit again,” said Moldovan. “The kids had lots of fun, and it was a great experience for all involved.” For more information on The Second and Seven foundation, visit the link here.
