Ultra Music Festival Survival Kit: five things you need to make it out alive
March 23, 2015
March is known around South Florida for spring break, and having 100,000 people descend upon downtown Miami to dance and fist bump to world famous DJs at Ultra Music Festival —The festival will be at Bayfront Park in downtown Miami roughly an hour away from the Boca Campus.
In its 17th year, there will likely be some FAU owls in the mix. This is a survival kit for anyone who will be headed down to experience the spectacle of Ultra.
Before the survival kit, here’s a couple of notes on the expectations and realities of this behemoth music festival:
Parking is intense: expect to pay around $20 for decent parking a day.
Do not expect to see every DJ from beginning to end: with the wealth of talent, set times will conflict with each other.
Try to make it out to one of the pool parties or events at some of the major clubs the week following up to the event.
Almost every world famous DJ will be in Miami, and there is always a possibility of surprise guests. If you’re interested in finding events, here is a great place to start.
Now on to what you should bring:
Smartphone and charging device–
When watching the visual productions, everyone at one time or another will pull their phone out to record DJs, or any of the crazy characters seen walking around. What most people forget is to bring a battery pack, because a phone battery will go fast. Also, be sure to clear out some room on your phone for pictures and video. There will be cellphone recharge stations, but they are located at stage 7 according to the Ultra Music Festival website. Another must-have is the Ultra App for your mobile phone. It’s free and will help planning out whom to see and at what time.
Plastic Bags-
Bring a couple of clear plastic bags to hold your cell-phone and other essentials. It will be the end of March and it will be hot and it may just rain like it did last year. No one wants to worry about their phones being ruined while jamming to Tiesto.
A Meetup Spot-
Remember there will be a ton of people, so kiss cell-phone service goodbye. Right when you get into the park designate an area to go to if you and your group get separated, or if you want to see different DJs. There is a nice lawn right by the live stage and it works perfectly for a rendezvous spot.
Water–
This one should be a no-brainer, but it’s surprising how many people forget to stay hydrated. Miami will be hot and with all the people, it will be even hotter. Camelbacks are not allowed so make sure to bring some cash to purchase a water bottle, that way you can refill it at one of the many water refill stations.
Sunscreen–
After the first day, it’s pretty easy to see who was hanging out at main stage because of all the bright red sunburns. Unless you plan to hang out in the Megastructure for the whole festival, plan to protect your skin.
This year, Ultra has heightened their security because of the trampling that happened last year when a group of people jumped the fence to sneak into the festival. Don’t plan on bringing any totems or laser pointers. Also keep the face masks at home but bring a bandana for the dust.
It’s an 18+ event, don’t forget a form of approved identification or you won’t be let in.
