It looked like you had gotten knocked back to the 70’s upon entering the Brewhouse Gallery in Lake Park, Fla. on Saturday, May 16. The Brewhouse Gallery hosted an entire day of art and live music to celebrate their one year anniversary of being in business.

Eclectic, vintage furniture highlighted by dusty persian rugs and a collection of chairs – not one alike – with local art covering every inch of the walls, set the mellow mood. People were lying on the floor and lounging on beanbags, conversing with friends and strangers. There were Pac-Man machines in the corner of the next room where authentic tacos and a large variety of craft beer selections were being served, accompanied with loud colors and retro art on the wall.

The audience was as unique as the decor, with everyone from young “hipsters” wearing their large thick-rimmed glasses and drinking to an elderly couple sitting quietly together and holding hands in attendance.

Florida Atlantic junior Rawlin Zybach took the stage at 6:15 p.m. with his guitar in hand and his bandmates next to him. Together, Zybach, Michael Basso on the organ and Ryan McCauley on the drums, perform as Smith Sundy.

Smith Sundy is a group of friends that have been playing together since 2013. Inspired by bands such as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin, Smith Sundy performs what they call progressive psychedelic rock.

The group rocked the room Saturday night with their mix of ambient sounds coming from the organ and rock and roll coming from the guitar and drums – unconventional music by today’s standards. Zybach describes their music as “grass-roots mixed with a little jazz and oldies, with a new progressive psychedelic sound.”

The band didn’t even miss a beat when Basso was rocking out so hard that he accidently flung the maracas in his hands, shattering against the art filled walls.

FAU commercial music masters student Billy Schmidt also graced the stage with his guitars and bandmates Rachel Duvall as lead vocalist, Sage Duvall on drums, Oren Gross on bass and lead guitarist Mike Guido as Raggy Monster.

The band was founded in 2011 by Billy Schmidt, who based the band’s name off of his imaginary friend when he was four years old.

Raggy Monster has an alternative indie rock sound inspired by bands like Muse and Radiohead. Their classical and transcendental music blend radiated throughout the whole venue, portrayed through Duvall’s voice.

Smith Sundy can be found on “CompOWLation Volume 4”  and Raggy Monster on “CompOWLation Volume 3” – student-artist albums made by FAU’s label Hoot Wisdom Recordings.

Hoot Wisdom is working to keep up with the ever-evolving music industry by promoting their musicians through events, social media and music downloading sites, according to recently graduated Hoot Wisdom Recordings President, Matt Smith.

“The mission is to just get the music heard, and that’s like a really difficult mission, but you do that by qualifying the music and getting really good publicity,” said Smith.

Bands such as Smith Sundy and Raggy Monster have been promoted by the label and by Smith himself. Basso stated that they can attribute some of their success to Hoot Wisdom by letting them “utilize their recordings” to promote their music.

Smith’s thoughts were further solidified with the success in selling over 400 copies of “CompOwlation Volume 3” in 2013 after it was featured in the Palm Beach Post.

The FAU community can support FAU bands on social media. Hoot Wisdom Recordings keep followers up to date on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. To purchase “CompOwlation Volume 4,” check it out on Bandcamp and for more information about Hoot Wisdom, visit their website.
