Alumna artist sells paintings for charity
FAU alumna Alexa Caskey is traveling the world and raising money for sea turtles
October 5, 2015
With her dog Beans in tow and a full tank of gas, Florida Atlantic alumna Alexa Caskey is looking to make a change with her art as she travels the country.
Growing up, Caskey was always interested in colored pencils and pens, leaving her with no doubt in her mind that she wanted to become an artist. She came to FAU in 2005 as an engineering major, but painting was always her passion.
After graduating in 2009, she immediately made the move to Alaska, looking for a change of scenery, but returned to Florida shortly after, finding a job so she could save money for yet another move.
This move was to Hawaii, where she would begin to settle down and establish her own business selling her paintings.
She stayed in Hawaii for three years, then chose to take her show on the road – literally. Now she is living with her dog in a 1988 RV moving from “one tropical paradise to the next.”
She draws her inspiration from the beach and its wildlife – something she puts effort into preserving not only through her art, but through the donations she gives to the Sea Turtle Conservancy Organization – a nonprofit based in Gainesville, Florida, dedicated to raising awareness of the dangers sea turtles face – and the Turtle Island Restoration Network.
With each painting sold, she donates 10 percent of the revenue, raising approximately $5,000 since 2011.
Even though Caskey is traveling around the world, she has not forgotten where it all started. She had three shows in Boca Raton and one of those shows was in Mizner Park.
As for the future, Caskey is looking to move back to Hawaii this December and hire an agent to further her career and present her work in art galleries.
