Florida Atlantic’s Boca Raton’s Student Union will be hosting Geek Fest, a cosplay, comic book and anime convention. The event will be held on Saturday, March 26 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, March 27 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

“I go to Geek Fest every year,” said Derek Skelton, a senior studying computer science. “It’s awesome to see all the costumes. I’m excited to pick up some new comics, too. My favorite anime right now is One-Punch Man.”

Students can participate in photo ops, check out comic books, anime toys and figurines, compete in tournaments and enjoy an all-you-can-eat buffet for $7.75 at the Atlantic Dining Hall.

The event will feature costume contests with cash prizes totaling over $1,000. Saturday’s contest is for adults 13 and up, and Sunday’s contest is for all ages.

The first place prize on Saturday will include $200 cash, an award medal, a framed certificate, a T-shirt and a limited-edition toy bundle, according to the Geek Fest website. Sunday has the same prizes, but the cash prize will be increased to $300.

Aimée Laclaustra, a sophomore studying neuroscience and computer programming, said she attended another convention last year and is looking forward to attending FAU’s Geek Fest. “I’m going as Yunna from Future Diaries,” she said.

FAU’s Easter Bunny, who makes an appearance in the Atlantic Dining Hall every year, will also be present at the event to take pictures and celebrate Easter weekend. Special guest Catwoman in Miami, known as the face of Geek Fest Florida, will also be attending.

After the main event on Saturday, there will be an after-party in The Burrow from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.

Admission will be free for FAU students and children 10 and under. Public admission is $16 on event days and $13 for tickets purchased in advance on the Geek Fest website.
