Dances We Dance, a showcase of student and staff performers presented by Florida Atlantic’s Department of Dance, will premiere in the University Theater from April 28 through 30. Showings will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Sunday as well as 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The showcase will feature student dancers and teachers dancing to a variety of different genres and styles of dance, from ballet to hip-hop and ballroom dancing. Previous Dances We Dance events have also featured modern dance, tap and theater.
This event is directed by Clarence Brooks, the associate professor of dance. According to last year’s announcement on the College of Arts and Letters website, the showcase is “a capstone experience for students enrolled in all genres and levels of dance in the department of theatre and dance.”
Students will be able to work together to create dances, learn choreography and technical skills, and give performances of dance in an array of genres.
According to the FAU Events website the event is “a celebration of dance in which students and faculty choreograph and perform a selection of dances from a variety of different forms.”
Previous Dances We Dance showcases have included “Celebrating the Holidays” which was a celebration of the holiday season as choreographed by students.
According to a previous years showcase pamphlet, the Dances We Dance events are populated with dance minors, majors and student from numerous areas of study at FAU. Over a hundred students from every college under the university have been involved in the Dances We Dance showcase.
“My team has about 18 people performing, but there are other groups as well, I’d say there’s probably about 40 people dancing” Lisa Lago Espadas, the president of Ballroom at FAU, said via email about this year’s event.
Tickets are available at the Student Union Box Office and Ticketmaster, with single tickets on sale for $20. Student tickets cost $12 and tickets for FAU faculty and alumni cost $15.
