Women’s Basketball: FAU breaks program record with 13th consecutive loss

The Owls committed 10 of their 20 turnovers in the first quarter alone.

lorida Atlantic women’s basketball is now on the wrong side of history, having set a new program record with its 13th consecutive loss. The Owls fell to Rice University 89-55 Saturday night in Houston, which was their largest margin of defeat this season.

FAU (4-19, 0-12 Conference USA) shot 32.8 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers. The giveaways led to 22 points for Rice (14-9, 6-7 Conference USA).

The Boca Raton-based Owls were led by freshman Alexis Shannon, who finished with 13 points on 5-of-14 shooting.

After starting the game 0-for-3 from the field and committing four turnovers in the opening three minutes of the game, junior Sasha Cedeno finally broke her team’s scoring drought with a 3-pointer.  

The Owls lone other field goal of the quarter came on a Shannon 3-pointer as well. Overall, FAU went 2-for-10 and committed 10 turnovers in the first quarter alone while being outscored 25-8.

The second quarter did not go any better for the Owls, as they were outscored 29-12 by Rice.

FAU shot 21 percent from the field in the first half, including 2-of-12 from deep. Rice, on the other hand, shot 56 percent in the first half.

Although FAU opened the third quarter outscoring Rice 7-3, the Owls were eventually outscored 16-7 the remainder of the quarter.

Rice shot 52.5 percent from the field for the game, including 8-of-20 from deep. Rice sophomore Nicole Iademarco led all scorers with 18 points.

FAU will come back home  next week to face Louisiana Tech on Thursday, Feb. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
