A car struck a bicyclist on Glades Road just outside FAU Wednesday afternoon. Little more concrete information was available Wednesday evening. While police on the scene initially told the UP the incident involved an FAU student and was potentially fatal, the Sun-Sentinel later reported that a 21-year-old man was expected to recover after being transported to Delray Medical Center.

FAU spokeswoman Kristine Gobbo, citing FAU police, said the victim was not an FAU student. But she could not confirm any other personal information for either the victim or the driver, and stated that “limited information is available at this time,” because Boca Raton police, not FAU police, are handling the incident.

A spokesperson for the Boca Raton Police Department could not be immediately reached for comment.

The victim’s identity has not been released, but he or she may be a student at Palm Beach State College, not FAU.

The incident, which happened around noon, left a mangled bicycle on its side in front of a gray Volkswagen about 200 feet from the west entrance of FAU. Police temporarily closed off the road to investigate, but normal traffic flow has resumed.

The UP will update this story with more information as it becomes available.

Gideon Grudo contributed to the reporting of this story.

UPDATE by Allison Nielsen (9/15, 11:15 a.m.):

A Boca Raton police spokesperson said the cyclist, who is “doing well,” was carrying a Palm Beach State College ID, “but it’s unknown if he is currently attending classes.”

A Boca Fire Rescue spokesperson told the UP that the cyclist sustained “significant injuries,” which is why he was taken to Delray Medical Center —  it contains one of two trauma centers in Palm Beach County.

heh, i bet it was the same female driver that once ran the stop signs in front of the Apartments, hit my bike, and left the scene… FAU PD gave here the ticket for the stop sign, not sure about the hit-and-run. (she did not realize she hit the bike, I beg to differ due to the damage to her paint work)
